How Your Refrigerator Actually Works
A refrigerator is a sealed refrigeration loop: a compressor pressurizes refrigerant gas, pushes it through the condenser coils where it releases heat and condenses into a liquid, then routes it through an expansion device into the evaporator coils, where it absorbs heat from inside the cabinet and boils back into a gas before returning to the compressor. That cycle repeats constantly, throttled on and off by a thermostat or electronic control board reading a thermistor. Every component in that loop has a duty cycle limit, and the compressor is the part that wears fastest because it runs the most hours over the appliance's life.
Two supporting systems fail almost as often as the sealed system itself. The defrost system - a heater, a defrost thermostat or bi-metal switch, and a timer or adaptive control board - periodically melts frost off the evaporator coil so airflow stays unrestricted; when any one of those three parts fails, frost builds up until airflow is blocked and the fridge stops cooling even though the compressor still runs. The ice maker mechanism, where present, is its own small machine: a fill valve meters water into a mold, a heater releases the formed cubes, and a motor-driven ejector arm or auger pushes them out. Door gaskets are the quiet failure point - as the magnetic strip inside the gasket loses pull or the vinyl takes a compression set, cold air leaks out and the compressor has to run longer to compensate, accelerating wear on everything else.
Modern refrigerators increasingly use variable-speed inverter compressors rather than the older single-speed design, and while inverter compressors run more efficiently and put less strain on the electrical system at startup, when they do fail the diagnostic process is different because a failing inverter board can mimic a compressor problem symptom for symptom. On single-speed units, a start relay and overload protector sit directly on the compressor and are actually a common failure point in their own right - a bad start relay can prevent the compressor from starting at all, which reads to an owner as sudden total refrigerator failure but is often one of the least expensive parts to replace in the whole appliance.
What San Antonio's Climate and Housing Stock Mean for This Appliance
San Antonio's cooling season runs longer and hotter than almost anywhere else in the country outside the Gulf Coast and the desert Southwest - triple-digit highs are common from June through August, and warm weather routinely extends from April into October. A unit that would cycle on for a third of each hour in a mild climate can run closer to half the hour here for months at a stretch, and that shows up in our records as accelerated wear on evaporator fan motors, defrost heaters, and start relays in units that have sat through several San Antonio summers.
Housing stock adds a second layer. In historic neighborhoods like King William, Monte Vista, and parts of downtown, kitchens were often built around much smaller refrigerators than are sold today, and electrical circuits can still be older 15-amp runs shared with other kitchen loads rather than a dedicated outlet - which matters when a compressor's inrush current trips a breaker intermittently and gets misdiagnosed as a compressor fault. Newer construction in areas like Stone Oak, Alamo Ranch, and other suburban developments generally has dedicated circuits and deeper cabinet openings built for counter-depth French-door and side-by-side units, but those built-in-style installations leave tighter clearances around the condenser coil, so a refrigerator pushed flush against a wall in one of these kitchens can overheat even when the appliance itself is healthy.
San Antonio's summer storm season brings the additional risk of power surges and brief outages, both of which are hard on refrigerator control boards and compressor start components. A surge that's severe enough to damage a control board doesn't always announce itself immediately - sometimes a unit runs seemingly normally for weeks afterward before a marginally damaged board finally fails outright. We see a modest but real bump in control board and start relay calls in the weeks following major summer storm systems, which is worth knowing if a refrigerator issue develops shortly after a period of severe weather.
Common Failure Patterns We See and Repair-vs-Replace Guidance
Across our service calls, defrost system failures - a burned-out heater, a stuck defrost thermostat, or a control board that stops initiating defrost cycles - are the single most frequent reason a refrigerator stops cooling properly while still running. It typically shows up as a warm fridge with a working freezer, or heavy frost buildup on the back wall of the freezer compartment. Evaporator and condenser fan motor failures are close behind, usually announced by a buzzing or grinding noise that gets louder before the unit stops cooling entirely. Door gasket wear is common enough in units past the five-year mark that we check it as a matter of course, since a soft or torn gasket left unaddressed drives up compressor run time and can accelerate a second failure elsewhere.
On the repair-vs-replace question, most of what we see is worth fixing: fan motors, defrost components, gaskets, water inlet valves, and control boards are all moderately priced parts relative to the cost of a new refrigerator, and a repair typically restores the unit to full working condition. The exception is a sealed-system failure - a refrigerant leak or a failed compressor - which requires recovering refrigerant, replacing the compressor, and recharging the system, work that's both more expensive and, on a refrigerator more than eight to ten years old, often not worth doing relative to replacement cost. We're upfront when a call falls into that category rather than running the repair anyway.
Door-mounted water and ice dispensers add another layer of components worth mentioning separately - the dispenser actuator switch, the auger motor driving ice through the door chute, and the tubing itself, which can develop slow leaks or freeze-blockages where it passes through the door hinge area. These dispenser-specific issues are common enough in our call volume that we treat them as their own diagnostic category rather than folding them into general ice maker troubleshooting, since a dispenser problem doesn't necessarily mean the ice maker mechanism itself has failed.
What a Service Visit Involves
A diagnostic visit starts with checking actual cabinet temperatures against the control setting, then working through the systems in order: listening to the compressor and fans, checking the defrost heater and thermostat for continuity, reading the thermistor's resistance against a temperature chart, and inspecting the door gaskets and hinges for wear or misalignment. If the ice maker is the complaint, we check water pressure at the fill valve, look for mineral buildup restricting flow, and cycle-test the module. Any suspected sealed-system issue is confirmed with pressure readings before we recommend that path, since it's the most expensive repair category and we don't want to guess.
