Frost-free upright models add a defrost system - heater, thermostat, and timer or board logic - to periodically clear ice off the evaporator coil, the same way a refrigerator does; manual-defrost chest freezers skip that system entirely, trading convenience for mechanical simplicity and, generally, better energy efficiency.
Door and lid seals matter more on a freezer than almost any other appliance in the house, for a specific reason: freezers are typically opened far less often than a refrigerator, sometimes just once every few days, which means a slowly failing seal can go unnoticed for weeks while frost quietly builds up inside from humid air being drawn in every time the door does open. That frost accumulation restricts airflow around stored food and, on frost-free models, can overwhelm the defrost system's capacity to clear it, eventually leading to a freezer that runs constantly but still loses temperature control.
Chest freezers, which open from the top, are inherently more efficient at holding cold air in because cold air doesn't spill out when the lid opens the way it does when an upright door swings open - which is part of why chest freezers, even manual-defrost models without the added complexity of a defrost system, tend to run more efficiently and see fewer mechanical failures over their lifespan than comparable upright models. The tradeoff is organizational: manual-defrost units require the owner to periodically defrost the unit entirely, and neglecting that maintenance lets frost accumulate to the point that it genuinely restricts usable storage space and interior airflow around the evaporator plate.

Seals, defrost components, and evaporator fans are all economical repairs relative to freezer replacement cost and are generally worth fixing outright. Compressor failure is the harder call, particularly on garage-stored units that have already run six to eight years under summer heat stress - the accelerated wear pattern in those units means we're more likely to recommend replacement there than we would for an identical indoor unit of the same age, simply because the remaining sealed-system components have likely absorbed similar heat stress.
Many newer freezers include a built-in high-temperature alarm meant to alert the owner if the interior temperature rises above a safe threshold for stored food - and when that alarm system's sensor or the alarm circuit itself fails, it can either produce false alarms that get ignored over time or, worse, fail silently and not alert the owner to a genuine temperature excursion, which is worth testing periodically rather than assuming it will function correctly indefinitely.
Upright freezer door alignment is worth checking on its own, separate from the gasket itself - a door that's sagged slightly on its hinges over years of use can prevent even a healthy gasket from sealing fully along one edge, which produces the same frost-buildup symptom as a worn gasket but calls for a hinge adjustment rather than a gasket replacement.
